Kayaking

One 30 minute kayak trip and I saw three things I've never seen before.

1. The Northern Flicker
  • Hanging out with starlings
  • Eating off of the ground, then flying to a few tree trunks once it saw me
  • They've got a lot going on. Mixed stripes and polka-dots make them fashionably senseless, yet attractive.

2. SOME kind of gar
  • About 1.5 ft long
  • Swimming slow in the clear border between light and dark shallows
  • More likely to have been a lake trout

3. The Red-Eared Slider
  • Very large, sunning on a boat lift
  • Eyed me suspiciously and vanished when more people stepped onto the dock.
