Home for Easter

Damn! I missed it again! Twice now I've missed the opportunity to get extremely drunk on Easter Eve and view Turner's Norham Castle on the pastel morning of puke.

I met the dude I will be living with over the summer on Gull Lake. Turns out he is my friend Rachel Klegon's boyfriend. I met Rachel last semester in the Great Lakes wiki class and she gave me rides. So, she invited me over for a get together with Simon and her, and Simon's EL High School friends.

They're like the group of high school friends I wish I had. Let me count, I have three that I actually hang out with when I am home: 1) Erik, 2) Aris, 3) Brian. But, the chances of us being in town at the same time are rare and anybody beyond them is a big stretch of awkwardness. Though, when I come home I usually just play hermit anyway, take a drive or recycle. I might have coffee with Jen Goss though tomorrow, and we might talk about Japanese rock, and the psychology of relationships. Yay! I met Jen Goss, like I met Rachel Klegon; we were both stuck doing something lame and wore it on our sleeves. Easy to comiserate with.

There are only a few things to do in Grand Rapids if you have no friends there and only a couple of days to spend. You can go to Catholic mass, listen to some totally rad NuAltRock (TOOL!), go to salvation army, or walk one of the three massive shopping malls. Anything else requires more time, and more friends. However, even though it is a lonely place, if you go to Steak & Shake you will undoubtedly see someone from the past that you never wanted to see ever again (and though you will have forgotten their name, they have not returned the favor).

It is funny how the shorter you stay, the more money you feel compelled to spend in order to appease your depression. GR should work that into their motto. It would be better than their current one. But I feel a double bind walking into conservative, religiously funded malls like Woodland, CentrePoint and Rivertown. I go to somehow feel a little better about sheltered civilization but leave wishing I had maybe come with Allah at my side.

I think College induces schizophrenia.

The good news is that I received Sean and Sara's wedding RSVP, and the big day is May 26. Aris and Kyra are having theirs in August, I believe. Even Jen Goss is continuing the trend of getting hitched to her high school sweetheart Sean Wceisel (whose leg is strong enough to kick someone's face off). Finally, I just found out that my cousin Dave (one of the many Daves) is getting married in August as well. What a delightful summer this could be!
